Visit to Peter Korn’s garden

Beautiful lupins and ”the meadow” in the background

Stepping into Peter Korn’s garden is like stepping into a completely different part of the world. Peter has created a unique ecosystem of ordinary plants like lupins and irises mixed with anything but ordinary plants like cactus. To grow cacti in Sweden seemed like magic to me, so I was very excited to visit this place.

The garden is set on a hillside with a view to die for. The borders are made out of sand and gravel – which is how Peter has gotten exotic plants to grow in a cool climate. If you’re curious to know more, Peter has written a book on about the garden.

Peter was nice enough to give me one of the cacti he has grown. He ensured me that it will survive the Swedish winter as long as it gets plenty of sun and stays planted in sand. I gave it a new home in the sunniest corner of my garden.

Vegetable garden in a small space

Window boxes on the south facing wall are great for strawberries.
I’m thinking about getting three more for basil and other herbs.

For a long time I had given up on the idea of growing veggies. Our back garden doesn’t get enough sun and our two bunnies would get to the plants before I did.

One day I was scrolling though photos of Ulla Molin’s garden when I stumbled upon a picture of here veggie garden. It was small and its structure reminded me of my front entrance.

A couple of cheap raised beds, containers and window boxes later I had a vegetable garden.

Coriander gone to town. These were just 3 small plants a few weeks ago.

Pergola makeover

Äntligen har vi fått till en pergola makeover! Detta var den sista stökiga delen av trädgården så det känns minst sagt skönt att ha det färdigt.

Vi målade, bytte tak och lade gråmelerad gårdssingel med trampstenar i oregelbunden skiffer. Eftersom även rundad gårdssingel kan sticka lite i fötterna är trampstenar himla trevligt.

Måla pergolan svart på utsidan, ljus på insidan

Färgen blev svart på insidan och ljusgrå på insidan. Min tanke är att hålla insidan ljus för att den ska kännas större och mer välkomnande. Samtidigt så smälter den in i omgivningen med en mörk färg. Man kan tänka lite på det som en upplyst grotta ute i naturen, en grotta som man gärna kliver in i.

Japanese Maple ”Orange Dream”

This little tree is the centrepiece of my garden. I planted it in the sunny corner of the garden but had to move it since it prefers quite a lot of shade. Today it’s placed in a spot that gets around four hours of sun in the middle of the day and it’s doing wonderfully!

The name Orange Dream describes its spring color. Later in the season it turns lime green and shines all the way though fall.

Simple summer containers

White spruce (Picea glauca ’Conica’), Sweet potato vine, three Pink Petunias

Here are my summer containers for the front entrance. The centerpiece is a White spruce (Picea glauca ’Conica’). For summer color I am using Sweet potato vine and pink Petunias.

Since the centrepiece is an evergreen it will look good in the container throughout the whole year. When fall comes I will switch the summer plants for some darker colors and in winter add Christmas lights on the White spruce.

I’ll give you updates as the season progresses.
